900-year-old Moorti of Krishna at Suryanarayan temple, Magala village, Bellary, Karnataka. This temple is dedicated to Trikuta - Shiva, Vishnu and Surya. It was constructed in 1209 CE by Sameyada Garuda Marmmarasa, details of which is found on an inscription in a slab at the temple. The same inscription mentions about grants of land made by the king’s treasurer Singayya, a Brahmin, for the maintenance of the shrine. Other Mahajanas of Mamgola also donated lands for the temple. The inscription is a record of the Hoysala king Nissankapratapa Chakravartin Vishnuvardhana Vira Ballala II (C. 1192-1211). It also describes a genealogy of the Hoysala kings from the founder Sala down to Vira Ballala II.
A Saptamatrika panel from this shrine is featured along with description in a chapter on ’64 Yoginis and Astamatrikas’ in my upcoming book ‘VishwaGuru Bharat: Echoes of the Ancients’, which is in publishing process under Subbu Publications banner.
Visited the shrine in January 2023.
Hare Krishna 🙏.
